Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

What ages do you treat?

As a pediatric occupational therapist, our focus is on treating individuals within the age range of 0 to 18 years old.

What is Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI)?

Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) is a therapeutic technique used in physical and occupational therapy to treat children with motor delay by improving automatic postural responses and promoting progress towards developmental milestones. The goal of DMI is to provoke a specified active motor response from the child in response to defined dynamic exercises prescribed by the therapist. This comprehensive intervention incorporates current research on neurorehabilitation, technologies, and methodologies. DMI stimulates neuroplasticity to facilitate new neuronal connections and development of motor milestones.

What is the weight limit for DMI Therapy?

Due to the physical demands of DMI Therapy, a weight limit is enforced to protect the
child and the therapist from injury. Our weight limit is 35 lbs for a child that requires
assistance. However, weight limit is not a factor for children that are able to walk with
minimal assistance. Ultimately, each child is evaluated on a case-by-case basis, so
contact us to determine if DMI Therapy is right for your child.

Who can benefit from DMI?

Children experiencing motor delays or neurological deficits can find valuable support through DMI. This intervention is applicable across all age groups, beginning as early as 1-2 months. Regardless of cognitive levels or the extent of neurological challenges, DMI proves beneficial for children, fostering neuroplasticity in the developing brain.

What diagnosis do you see?

We don’t define or limit our services to specific diagnosis. We work with children with all abilities.

Where do sessions take place?

Our therapist will come to you and all sessions will take place in the comfort of your own
home. Wellness consults are offered virtually.

Do you accept insurance?

Currently we are an out-of-network provider. As an out-of-network provider, we are able
to deliver high-quality services, free from the constraints of strict insurance policies that
often dictate the scope of services. Here’s what this approach enables:
High-Quality Services: Our commitment to providing top-notch care includes an
individualized treatment plan with a 1:1 therapist/child ratio. This allows us to prioritize
therapeutic practices that best support your child’s success, unrestricted by insurance
limitations. Unlike larger, insurance-based pediatric clinics that adhere to “billable
activity,” our priority is delivering the best possible care.
Access to Preventative Care: Unlike in-network clinics, insurance providers typically
do not cover occupational therapy as a preventative option. Waiting until a child is
diagnosed with an impairment before accessing services can result in delays. Our
virtual wellness consults empower you to proactively address concerns or seek
professional advice, preventing potential delays in your child’s development.
Streamlined Care: Our practice avoids the time and expense of submitting claims,
fighting over reimbursements, and devotes that time to your child’s specific needs.
Uninterrupted Care: Our clients value the more direct contact with our therapist without
an insurer intervening. Enjoy the convenience of reaching out to our provider for
questions, feedback on home exercises, follow-up care, and advice regarding your
child’s development. We are available as a valuable resource to support your child’s
ongoing progress.
Unlimited Sessions: As a private pay client, you can get as many sessions as your
child requires without the hassle of waiting for insurance approval.

What is your cancellation policy?

Traditional Occupational Therapy Services
Attendance and participation in therapy along with complete compliance with any
associated home programs, are essential for therapeutic success.

While Anka Medical understands that illnesses and emergencies occur, we respectfully request that you avoid frequent cancellations or “no shows”. Please adhere to the following policy regarding providing our providers/office with advance notification for any cancellations resulting from a conflicting appointment, vacation, obligations for work or family, or any other event.

  • All cancellations must be submitted 24 hours prior to your scheduled
    appointment.
  • Clients who cancel less than 24 hours in advance will be billed $50
  • Clients who fail to show up for a scheduled appointment without notice will be
billed for the full session fee.

DMI Intensives
Missed visits will not be refunded, except in the case of hospitalization. Please make
every effort to give 2-weeks notice if you cannot attend your intensive. If the therapist
has to cancel for any reason, sessions missed will be refunded back to the family.

For further details on our cancellation policy, please contact us.

Why does it cost so much for the comprehensive occupational therapy evaluation?

Evaluations with Reports
A minimum 3-hour evaluation, including the following services:

  • Direct assessment (2-3 hours)
  • Records review
  • Telephone consultation with other team members to gain information about the
    child (upon request).
  • Written report (2-2.5 hours)
  • One hour parent conference
Can I use a report from another facility?

If your child has received an occupational therapy assessment from another facility
within the last year, please provide us with a copy at the initial screening session. After
reviewing the report, we can let you know if that assessment will be sufficient for moving
directly into treatment.

When an assessment was done at another facility, the first therapy session will be charged at a higher rate to account for the additional time required for us to review records and reports and to plan your child’s therapy.

What can I expect from booking a DMI intensive?

Treatment Intensives can range from 1 – 3 weeks long, 5 days per week, 2 sessions per
day. Each DMI session is 45 minutes long and should be spaced out by at least 1 hour
to give your child a much-needed break in between sessions.

A DMI intensive session is comprised of a series of exercises targeting age-appropriate
gross motor skills. It’s important to schedule sessions based on your child’s endurance
and therapy tolerance, as these intensives can be physically and emotionally
demanding. A key aspect of the intensive is the home exercise program, which will be
provided in the final days. These tailored exercises are meant for you to continue with
your child after the intensive, ensuring the maintenance and further development of the
acquired skills. We will make sure you feel confident in performing these exercises
before concluding the program. Consistency with the home program is vital for your
child’s ongoing progress.

BOOKING
Scheduling is done on a first come, first served basis. To secure your intensive, we
require a non-refundable deposit upon booking that will go towards your total cost. The
remaining balance shall be paid on the first day of the intensive. Anka Medical is not in-network with any insurance companies, but you may request a bill and receipt that you can submit to your insurance company or health savings account.
